After a concussion

Cleared by your doctor, and still not right.

Most concussion recovery advice ends at the point where the scans come back clean. For a lot of people, that's not where the problem ends.

If your head injury was recent, start with a doctor. Emergency care exists for a reason, and the first days after a head injury are not the time for anything else. Nothing here replaces that, and we'd tell you the same thing on the phone.

This page is for later. Weeks or months out. You've been checked, you've been cleared, and something still isn't back.

  • The fog that lifts and returns
  • Light and noise that wear on you in a way they didn't before
  • Sleep that never fully recovered
  • A shorter fuse than you used to have, and the sense that you're working harder to do the same things

That gap — medically cleared, functionally not yourself — is where most people are told to wait it out. Some do recover on their own. Others are still waiting a year later.

The pattern

Why this looks like the rest of our neurofeedback work.

Post-concussion symptoms tend to cluster the same way attention, sleep, mood and mental fatigue cluster in everyone else: they're outputs of a nervous system struggling to regulate. That's why the person recovering from a car accident and the parent whose kid can't settle often describe surprisingly similar days.

LENS is a wellness service. It works alongside — never in place of — your doctor, therapist, or school supports.

Physician referrals

Who we see.

Physicians in Middle Tennessee refer patients to us — we work from a standing referral list. We also see professional athletes, and people recovering from car accidents, months and sometimes years after the injury.

Your first visit

What a first visit involves.

A 21-point recording and a written plan you keep. We walk you through what we see, alongside what you tell us about how your days actually go.

Fair questions

Asked by almost everyone who comes in after a head injury.

What should I expect the first time I come in after a head injury?
The first visit is The Harmonized Brain Map: about 60 minutes, a 21-point recording of brain activity, and a written plan you keep. We walk you through what we see alongside what you tell us about how your days actually go. It isn't a medical assessment of your injury, and it isn't a test you can fail.
How is this different from vestibular or vision therapy?
It's a different thing, and we don't do either one. Vestibular and vision rehab are clinical therapies delivered by clinicians. LENS is a wellness service, and a session asks nothing of you — no exercises, no drills, nothing to practice between visits. If you're doing either, keep doing it.
Can I do this alongside rehab I'm already doing?
Yes — that's usually how it goes. LENS is routinely used alongside other care, and we're glad to coordinate with providers you already trust. If your doctor or your rehab team has told you to hold off on anything, follow them; we'd say the same on the phone.
How long do people usually come?
A full course is 12 sessions, then maintenance — weekly sessions taper to monthly for three months, then quarterly or twice a year. That’s the recommended course rather than a promise — how many sessions anyone needs varies, and we review it with you at every visit.
Do I need a referral?
No. Physicians in Middle Tennessee do refer patients to us — we work from a standing referral list — but you don't need a referral to call. If you'd rather your doctor was in the loop, we're glad to coordinate with them.
It's been over a year. Is it too late?
We don't predict how it would go for anyone. What we can tell you is that people come to us months and sometimes years after the injury, and a practitioner will tell you honestly on the free call whether LENS is a fit.
